Character creation (Grimdark)

The MC

After going through a rough couple of years, MoR's main character (the MC) has just inherited a house from his brother – who mysteriously disappeared after handing in a note of property transfer to the local magistrate. Who our MC was before that is completely up to you, however. The character creation process provides you with a set of decent skills that'll help you survive the dangerous world of Raana. Pick whatever suits you best – it doesn’t matter if you choose to be a rugged freebooter, an academy professor or a jack-of-all-trades – the coin will come to all enterprising men.

Parents' background

This part is pretty self-explanatory. Your parents, once proud owners of the deteriorated house you're currently occupying, could've served Ikaanos as professors, doctors, soldiers, thieves or big-game hunters. You can either Embrace or Revolt against your parents' chosen lifestyle. Embrace provides a boost to all skills within that profession, while Revolt gives you a larger skill spread (jack-of-all-trades style). Picking your parents' background doesn't lock you into a specific profession. You can freely increase skills that are unrelated to their profession once the game starts.

Troublesome event

This part of the character creation process explains why you've been having a rough couple of years. They provide you with a special skill boost and a disadvantage. Some backgrounds might also change the way NPCs talk to you – or offer special jobs/assignments during game play.

Traits

You're able to pick three normal traits and two sexual traits that'll further increase your skills/Attributes or give you various boons during gameplay.

Age

Selecting age provides further boosts and disadvantages to your character. If you're planning an Academic playthrough, best would be to choose the "Middle-aged" option. Pure combat playthroughs benefit from choosing "Young" etc. The effects from Age are pretty minor, however, and can be compensated in other ways – such as training, implants and reaching a high-enough Influence.

Difficulty

Sandbox

For a casual playthrough. Good for beginners or for those who don't want a challenge.

  • Auto shower enabled.
  • Retainer (+$70/day).
  • Easier combat rolls.
  • Reduced enemy damage (-20%).

Normal

No active effects.

Grimdark

The way MoR is meant to be played. A grittier experience that provides a nice challenge without increasing the grind.

  • Vendor prices and incomes are more realistic, adding additional strategy to economy management.
  • A batch of "tough" Political Events that could have a noticeable impact on Ikaanos' Control and Prosperity.
  • Slightly increased spawn rate for certain bandit groups.

A Dying World

The "A Dying World" setting adds an extra layer of difficulty to MoR and is best played together with Grimdark difficulty for the ultimate Masters of Raana challenge.

  • City Control and Prosperity start at 5.
  • Energy cell, durasteel and most other materials have their market supply decreased by up to 80%.
  • Only three HULC armors remain at The Transit Department.
  • Food market replenish rate reduced by roughly 50%.

Dice rolls

Just accept "Normal" (2D50) if you're not into dice roll spreads and mathematical calculations regarding the outcome of RNG situations.

  • 1D100 - classic old-school RPG that makes combat more deadly and surprising.
  • 5D20 - provides a generally stable dice roll outcome that weighs skill values over randomness.

Alright, choose your name, review your skills and start the Tutorial if you're new to MoR. The Tutorial is just two minutes long but provides you with imporant navigation skills regarding the character sheet, the journal and your Household menus.
