The hunting mechanics in Masters of Raana entail a lot of different aspects that a survivalist must take into consideration.
Finding a good spot
A red antlers or pelt icon indicates that there is a hunting location. Each location is unique with its own set of texts, events and skill prerequisites. It might take some exploration before you find that perfect spot best suited for your playstyle.
Available hunting locations
- The Wetlands (large game)
- Imogen's Barrow (large game)
- Avonmore Island (small game, quest-locked)
- Corazon jungles (small game, quest-locked)
- Blackfang valley (large game, if player has defeated local charucks)
Animal pool
Each spot has a unique pool that tells the area's abundance or scarcity when it comes to huntable game. A low value (2 or below) means a hunter suffers a severe penalty in all his tracking attempts (Survival skill). However, an area with an animal pool of 8 or higher means that the forests are rich with beasts, providing the player with a noticeable chance bonus instead.
The animal pool usually replenishes with up to one point per day. Pools cap between 6-9.
Preparations
Before starting a hunting session (Cost: 2 hours, 6 Stamina points, 5 ammo), you must choose your preferred weapon and hunting method.
Weapons
- Rifle: +5 Chance bonus.
- Shotgun: +12 Chance bonus when hunting small game. Less skins/pelt yield.
- Crossbow: -9 Chance bonus but higher skins/pelt yield.
Other equipment
- Backpack: available from Roo's General Store and maybe some other places; adds a +5 Chance bonus.
Hunting methods
- Search prey: greater success chance during rainy days, lower success chance during sunny days, greater success chance right before dusk, lower success when hunting small game (pelts).
- Stand hunting: lower success chance during rainy days, greater success chance right after dawn, greater success when hunting small game.
- Decoy: greater success chance during warm and sunny days.
Followers
Bringing Followers out on hunting trips can provide a sizeable bonus based on their Survival skill and traits.
- The Wild-born trait: +8 Chance bonus.
- The Jaeger trait: +20 Chance bonus.
- Ranged skill 40+: +5 Chance bonus.
- Survival 40+: +5 Chance bonus.
- Survival 80+: +15 Chance bonus.
- Survival 14 or less: -10 Chance penalty.
Success Chance
Your Hunting success chance is primarily determined by your Survival skill versus the difficulty or ease of the particular Hunting Spot you are in. It is modified by your Weapon, your Equipment, your chosen hunting Method, and your Followers' Skills & Traits, as noted above. Also, if your religion is Cult of the Elder, you get a bonus according to your Devotion: +5 if 25-49, +15 if 50-99, and +25 if 100+. Finally you get a -15 if you have the Near-Sighted Disadvantage.
Yields
Hunting provides you with skins , pelts and raw meat that you'll be able to either refine or sell directly to vendors.
The yield varies according to time, place and method, but is not affected by the success chance or roll. Yield is increased if the MC has the Wildborn trait, and if they are accompanied by a follower with the Jaeger trait.
Hunting attempts (if successful), will also increase your assigned Followers' hunting (Survival) skills by +1 (cap: 80). They also have a smaller chance to increase the MC's Survival skill (cap: 80), and Stealth skill (cap: 40).
