Background

Not much is known about Averil's parents, though rumors are her mother was a denaar addict that could no longer care for the child. Even so, for a while, fortune smiled on young Averil as she was taken in and raised by a loving elderly couple on a farmstead just outside Ikaanos. Her caretakers noticed there was more to the young girl than met the eye. Recognizing Averil as a prodigy, her caretakers enrolled her at the academy to study science and mathematics.

Unfortunately, her prodigious intellectual gifts propelled her to the center of the "Nadarian-Ekker controversy" of 2484. Averil was manipulated and used as a pawn by the rival professors. Finding herself on the losing side, she was banished from the academy. During this same turbulent period, her caretakers died, leaving Averil to fend for herself.

Although the precise chain of events leading up to this outcome remain unclear, she ended up in a prison camp outside the city. This dire circumstance required her to navigate between the cruelty of its hired overseers and the savages of the Raanic wilderness beyond the fence line. When she came of age, she was subject to the same depredations that she had watched other girls suffer at the hands of the guards. She has seen and endured some of the worst horrors that can befall young slaves in Ikaanos. The experience made her strong and an effective fighter, in spite of her diminutive frame.

On the outside she is young and innocent, yet under the innocent face of the young girl lies a brilliant mind corrupted with deep-seated hatred and vengeance burning within her against the slaver chieftain.

Personality

Averil is a study in contradictions: Outwardly, she is a sweet, innocent young girl – a role she is still able to play with disarming effectiveness. All the while, her mind possesses a once-in-a-generation capacity for mathematical and scientific inquiry and insight, but her soul burns for vengeance against the cruel overseers who inflicted terror on her and the other slaves on that remote ranch.

Character traits

  • Jaded
